I devote this first entry to introduce myself as an activist to my colleagues in the cooperative MásPúblico and to others who pass through this section and, in the near future, through my blog. They are «my motives’ what leads
me to commit to the Tide.

I work, at the time of this writing, at the Institute for Molecular Science, University of Valencia. I love science, but my social commitment does not end with my work as a scientist. So, for a couple of seasons I was a brief but intensely active Wikipedian. I learned a lot, met some great people, and know I will be back. During my three-year postdoctoral stay, I was part of the group of volunteers that runs Spartacus Books: a small radical bookstore and social center in the most marginal neighbourhood of Vancouver, which
operates as a not-for-profit, no-bosses, since 1973. Among my experiences as an activist -with the possible exception of the 15M/Indignados movement- these two
are the most important ones, so I think interesting to analyse what they have in common with each other and with The Tide.

Wikipedia and my Vancouver bookstore share with our coop the desire to educate and disseminate information. While good journalists seek to «inform, educate and entertain» Spartacus Books anarchists want to «educate, agitate, organise» and
the Wikipedians talk about «offering each person the sum of human knowledge». Different shades, but I think all stem from the same idea: democracy and freedom require universal access to education, knowledge, critical thinking.

The three projects also share the fact that they are collective. The result for me is that I feel them as my own, and, always taking care not to disturb the work of others, this encourages me to do what I think best. This form of
organization, of accepting help and decision making (call it horizontal, by consensus, or assembly) is not perfect, but it is very effective to leverage the intelligence and resources of a diverse group, a resource of great value. In my view, this is precisely what has allowed the wikipedia to survive Encarta (do you remember Encarta?) and to challenge the Britannica, and also what enabled our small radical bookstore to survive against the fearsome combination of the economic crisis, ebooks and competition from amazon.com and large chain superstores. Many small and medium-sized libraries closed their doors in Vancouver in those years, and instead the group of Spartacus Books kept finding ways to adapt and move on, and still does. I think an important part of the project More Public / The Tide [MásPúblico / La Marea] is to use the collective
intelligence and work to find ways to redignify journalism, to restore its
social utility and to stand up to the think tanks of the Free (?) Market.

Now something that sounds very hippy, but that must be said: both wikipedia as Spartacus Books and More Public (or The Tide) work on the basis of love.
Because of their vocation of service to the community or because of their
idealism, these projects wake esteem and affection, and this nourishes them. This seems very important to me. Without this, probably none of the three would survive.

Finally I see a common point between the three projects: instead of asking what they want, they do it. Theorists call this, which I think is important,
    «prefigurating utopia» or «direct action» against symbolic action (e.g.
demonstrations) or mediated action (e.g. collecting signatures). In recent times we have seen the magnificent examples of PAH [a platform of mutual aid against evictions] and [renewable energy] cooperatives as Som Energia. I think
also in the problem of manipulation of the media and the «crisis of journalism» it is worth it to go beyond the complaint and to take practical steps.

In my case, one of those steps was to decide to commit to the journalistic
cooperative project More Public and its medium, The Tide. Part of that
commitment involved investing some of my savings, and another part will be to maintain this blog. I will mainly dedicate it to scientific and academic outreach and to denounce pseudoscience. I’ll update it one to four times a month and I hope for your comments and suggestions to do my best.

    Salud.
